*RED WARRIORS MAKE BIG MARK, EARN BRONZE FINISH IN INT'L BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT!*
The UE Red Warriors Men’s Basketball Team blazed in the name of both the University and the Philippines as part of the 37th Promotion Cup international invitational tournament held recently in Jixi, a city in Heilongjiang province in the People’s Republic of China, ultimately earning third place and a bronze medal in the eight-team, four-nation tourney.
Their concluding game last Saturday, August 16. saw the Red Warriors clobbering the team of Liaoning University of Engineering and Technology, 104-66, to secure the tournament’s bronze medal before a big crowd at the Jixi Convention and Exhibition Center.
Red Warrior forward Nurjadden Datumalim was the team’s biggest scorer with 16 points, and not far behind were Fil-Canadian Cole Cruz-Dumont with 13 points, Nico Mulingtapang with 11 points, and Drayton Caoile, Dylan Benedict Despi and Kristoper Lagat each contributing 10 points. The Recto, Manila-based Warriors led every canto: 30-18, 54-36, 85-39, and 104-66 in the first, second, third and fourth quarters, respectively.
This big 38-point triumph marked a victorious conclusion to the Red Warriors’ campaign in an international arena that was supported by Armstrong Philippines and Tanduay Athletics and yielded a win-loss record of 3-2.
The Red Warriors’ three victories were at the expense of three Chinese teams: the Jilin Northeast Tigers at 104-77; host team Heilongjiang Youth Team at 97-64; and Liaoning, 104-66 The red-and-white squad’s two losses were from a pair of tightly fought matches: to Russia’s Khabarovsk State University of Physical Education, 84-93, in the elimination round, and to the Malaysia National Team, 82-90, in the crossover semis, with Malaysia and Russia ultimately bagging the tournament’s championship crown and silver medal, respectively.
The Red Warriors’ face-off against the Russian squad in particular was no mean feat, led as it was by Fil-Am John Abate’s game-high 29 points that were earned on top of Kristopher Lagat’s 12 points and Cole Cruz-Dumont’s 10 points.
Drayton Caoile, Drew Jimenez, Mark Joseph Cabero, Mariano Tanedo, Nurjadden Datumalim and Dylan Despi also chipped in for the UE team, after having swept their first two games, against Jilin Northeast Tigers and host squad Heilongjiang Youth Team. Thirdy Malaga, Nico Mulingtapang, Ronjie Go, Keian Spandonis and Wello Lingolingo completed the Red Warriors’ lineup at the Jixi-held 37th Promotion Cup international invitational basketball tournament.
Mu Jian, one of the tourney’s organizers, presented a souvenir to Red Warriors Head Coach Chris Gavina and Team Manager Jean Alabanza and Armstrong Philippines official Norman Gomez during a dinner-reception at Fine Hotel in Jixi before flying back to the country this past Monday, August 18.
In individual statements post-tournament, Head Coach Chris Gavina, Team Manager Jean Alabanza and Assistant Coach Paolo Hubalde cited that this overseas campaign made for an invaluable, truly team-building and -boosting experience for the squad in myriad ways especially ahead of the much-awaited opening of the men’s basketball tournament of Season 88 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) mid-September.
The Red Warriors’ coming UAAP matches will be preceded by two face-offs: at the PinoyLiga Big Dance Tournament this Wednesday, August 20, against the Mapua Cardinals, and a tuneup game on August 24 against SJ Belangel’s KBL team, themselves preceding the on-campus UE Pep Rallies on September 2 and 3, 2025, on the Manila and Caloocan campuses, respectively.
In sum, as Armstrong Philippines put it, the Red Warriors “didn’t just represent [but also] inspired.”
Congratulations and kudos, UE Red Warriors Men’s Basketball Team! Go fight, Red and White! GO FIGHT, RED AND WHITE!
